WALDO the SHORT-TAILED OPOSSUM
Born 4-7-01

Waldo the short-tailed opossum

Waldo the short-tailed opossum
He is really tiny, like 3 inches long.

Friday, June 8, 2001 - 12:31 p.m.

I was checking on our baby birds out front again and there are 5!!! I thought there were only 4! They are really getting about now and feathering in. I'm still afraid they will fall out of the damn planter.

Okay, I have made my decision. I have named my adorable little baby opossum Waldo! I can't get any pictures of him yet because he is still kinda panicky when out in the open and spends most of his time hiding in his log houses. I really want some photos soon though while he is still so small! He is just the size of a little mouse right now. He has big white ears that are too big for his body. LOL

On another pet related note, there is the sweetest Meyer's parrot baby for sale at PetsMart. I saw him the other day and he is still there. I guess he is still being handfed for another three weeks before he can go to a new home. I never knew about them before but it seems they are very sweet docile parrots that tend to be quiet, and not screamers. Yes, I am tempted....but on the other hand we plan to get a Parrotlet later in the summer so I just don't know. LOL I think I drive Tom crazy with all these pets.

What if I were to add an online journal back to my site? I used to have one a long time ago called Pretending to be Me....maybe someone remembers it. LOL I've also had online journals under an alias name for years before that. It just seems lately I am getting really wordy in the blog here, and that perhaps a journal would be more satisfying. Although I'd still keep the blog for shorter snippets. What do you think? Does anyone care? It's funny because I get at least 30-50 hits per day on this site, yet no one ever writes responses to things I ask. I'm feeling a bit unloved, people. LOL

The little birds in the nest on our porch are getting big! Their eyes are open now and I can see their little featherless wings working all the time. They are so active and I am terrified one of them will somehow work its way over the edge of the planter and fall splat on the concrete below.

Fun link o' the day: funcalculator.com. I especially like the orgasmic one. LOL!

Well, I was going to wait until I had a photo to post but it seems the little guy is pretty shook up from his plane ride and won't come out of his paper towel tube.....I got my baby short-tail opossum today! He arrived at Denver International Airport this morning. I was scared at first because they said they couldn't find any animals on the flight but in the end, they found his carrier in the wrong area and all was well. Whew. I haven't decided on his name yet because I haven't actually seen more than his tail at this point. I'll post photos and his name later.

More than you ever wanted to know about my new passion: Reese's Peanut Butter Bites and the other flavors too. Yummy!

I must be a webcam idiot because I have tried five different softwares and services to no avail. Actually, I did get SpotLife to work, the service that came with the camera but it only allows you something like an hour per month before you have to pay. And then today when I tried to set it up, it did not work. I didn't change anything so not sure why it isn't working. All I can say is that I have had it and am really pissed off. I have no idea what is wrong. I'm following all the directions yet the camera won't broadcast. I am thinking it must have something to do with the fact we are on a broadband connection. I'll have to ask Tom when he gets home if he has any clues as to how to fix this. For now, I quit. Grrrr.......

Betta Cam is running. LOL

Tuesday, June 5, 2001 - 09:31 a.m.

Ok, I got the cam to go live using the default service at SpotLife. Go see if interested. Right now it's just pointing at me, unshowered with messy hair. Or maybe it's pointed at Brenna or my gerbils.

I decided to try a javascript for updating my webcam. Looked simple enough. I created my page and then went to use my webcam software to send updates to the cam. I'm about ready to tear my hair out because I simply cannot get the ftp stuff to work. For some reason it wants to send the files outside my regular web directory which is something like public_html and my folders are all inside of that one. (if that makes sense) I don't know how to change the settings so it goes instead to public_html/quickcam. Help!

Monday, June 4, 2001 - 11:02 p.m.

Ok, so I'm getting my baby short-tailed opossum this week at long last. He was born April 7 which makes him a wee 2 months old. The breeder has also offered me a female who is a really pretty silver-ivory color (uncommon).....the problem is that opossums can't be housed together which means two cages to clean. On the other hand, I'm seriously considering breeding them if I get both.....but then we wanted to get a bird pretty soon and am now wondering if I am just getting in over my head, to stick with the original male opossum as planned, forget the female and get the bird later this summer. LOL

I got the webcam I ordered off Ebay the other day. I was so impressed with the quick delivery! Anyway, it works with my Windows 2000 and the quality isn't that bad. I had read horrid things about the Logitech QuickCam Express but it actually works better than my old webcam which was a Microtek Eyestar. My only problem now is getting the thing to go online. I signed up with Camarades because it seemed so easy to get a webcam online but I haven't gotten it to work yet. I am not sure what I am doing wrong but I suspect it's something in the configuration. I just don't understand some of the technical aspects of it all. There is some web software that came with the webcam but that doesn't work for me either. Can anyone help me? Is there some really super easy way to get a webcam online?

Monday, June 4, 2001 - 10:41 a.m.

No posts for Sunday. That's okay though because I posted so much on Saturday! I was looking over my entries and thinking maybe I should change this weblog format to be more of a diary where I post a long entry once a day. I dunno. Maybe. Anyway, I didn't post yesterday because we had a birthday party to go to and by the time I got home I wasn't in much of a mood to be online. I was pretty tired last night as well and fell asleep with Brenna around 8:00 I think it was.

The poll for May is closed. Here are the results:
Do you keep peanut butter refrigerated or in the cupboard?

Refrigerated - 8 votes = 14%
In the cupboard - 47 votes = 81%
I never buy or keep peanut butter - 3 votes = 5%

(I keep mine in the pantry, if anyone was curious. LOL)
Check out the new poll lower left side! :-)

I updated the nest photo in the entry below, in the new shot you can more easily see the nest itself and where the babies are. Then I got brave and took this new shot below, a closeup of the baby birds! I stood up on a chair but couldn't see into the nest so I held up my camera as high as I could and tilted it downward. Amazingly, I got a good shot!

Holy crap! Talk about almost being blinded. LOL I pull up Thoughts@Random expecting the usual muted blues and find a brand new sunny design!

Saturday, June 2, 2001 - 09:52 a.m.

Safeway grocery stores now carry their own pint size ice creams in flavors rivaling Ben & Jerry. As I write this, I am enjoying Rio Banana Samba which is akin to Chunky Monkey. It is yummy and I have no guilt eating ice cream for breakfast.

On a totally unrelated note, the landscapers started today! Yah! Soon we'll finally have our yard!

made from scratch
has two new photo entries for 5/31 and 6/1. I've been slacking on the weblog though.

Saturday, June 2, 2001 - 08:38 a.m.

I tried to get a photo of the birds on my porch but this is the best I could do. One shows the mama bird and she can see me through the living room window. I'm sure I am making her nervous. The other shot is the inside of the nest and that blobular clump of fluff towards the right is where the babies are, but are hard to see in this photo. Don't the flowers look just lovely? LOL
